The MI area handles through-hole insertion and soldering — the step that turns a populated SMT board into a complete assembly. One wave soldering line and one selective soldering line, run with dedicated carriers and profiled recipes, cover hand and auto insertion through to touch-up and visual inspection.
What happens here
After SMT the boards move to this area for insertion, wave or selective soldering, touch-up and visual inspection, and then on to box build or test. Because the same shop floor owns both the placement and the through-hole process, a mixed-technology board is never handed between suppliers mid-flow.
Process capability
Hand & auto insertionResistors, capacitors, diodes, connectors and relays, with odd-form and tall parts placed by trained operators against a written work instruction.
Wave solderingThe whole board passes the solder wave once, with preheat, flux spray and cooling zones. Recipes are set per board thickness and thermal mass.
Selective solderingFor mixed-technology boards and heat-sensitive parts, single-point or drag soldering keeps the heat local and protects components already placed by SMT.
How we control quality
Wrong part, missing part, reversed polarity and offset are the classic failure modes in through-hole assembly. Our control points:
- First-article approval on every batch and every line change before volume production.
- Profiled and measured reflow/wave curves, with periodic checks on pot and preheat temperatures.
- Visual inspection for barrel fill, bridging, solder balls and missed joints, traceable to the exact recipe and carrier.
- Rework on a dedicated station with temperature-controlled irons, logged and tied to the DMES traceability record.
